WALTERBORO, SC — The spirit of unity, determination, and community pride filled the air on Friday, April 3, 2026, as Colleton County School District hosted the 2026 Special Olympics Spring Games – Unified Sports at Colleton County High School's Band and Track Fields.

The district’s Special Olympics planning team collaborated closely with Jim Lewis, Area 8 Director for Special Olympics South Carolina, and Arturo Hervada, Director of Program Development for Special Olympics South Carolina, to ensure the event's success.

Athletes, families, educators, and community partners arrived early for registration. Athletes gathered and lined up for the parade, representing five elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school. The celebration opened with a presentation by the ROTC Color Guard, followed by the National Anthem performed by the FHES Honors Chorus. Officer PR1 Hutchens joined the athletes for the torch run and the ceremonial torch lighting.

The torch lighting marked the official start of the games, symbolizing courage, perseverance, and the heart of Special Olympics. Superintendent Jessica Williams delivered a warm welcome, celebrating the athletes and reaffirming the district’s commitment to inclusive opportunities. Guest speaker Mayor James Broderick shared an inspiring message about community strength and the importance of supporting every student’s potential.

Athletes then proudly recited the Special Olympics Oath:

“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., elementary students rotated through a variety of Unified Sports station activities, while middle and high school students competed in Special Olympics field and track events. The day concluded with an Awards Ceremony, where athletes were celebrated for their achievements before schools were dismissed.

This year's event was made possible through the generous support of sponsors, including SC Special Olympics – Area 8, Civitans Club, Walterboro Adult & Pediatric Medicine, ELKS Lodge, HCA Healthcare Colleton Hospital, Walterboro Family Practice, Stephens Funeral Home, PRTC, Walterboro Lions Club, Costco, IGA, Keepsake Scenery LLC, and individual sponsors.
