The Colleton County High School NJROTC performed a Presentation of Colors ceremony during the September 5 Camping World Race at Darlington Raceway, gaining a special opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at NASCAR racing.

Cadet Ensign Leslish Sosa-Perez, Cadet Ensign Kadaries Ford, Cadet Chief Petty Officer Mackenzie Seigler, and Cadet Chief Petty Officer Rylie Kemmerlin participated in this event, receiving a first-hand glimpse of the pit crew area and standing on the raceway itself during the pre-race ceremony. Their Presentation of Colors was televised nationally.

“The event at NASCAR, I would have to say, is one of the best events I’ve ever done with CCHS NJROTC. Everything was so planned out and everyone was amazing,” Cadet Rylie Kemmerlin said. “I’m so glad I got to be in the event and I’m so thankful for all the help and planning that was put into it.”

Cadet Rylie Kemmerlin’s colleagues also said they enjoyed the NASCAR experience.

“The day of the race came and I was very nervous and scared, but I knew I could do it with the support of my mom, papa, and my NJROTC instructors. It was really setting in going on the stage looking at the crowd and getting ready to present colors,” Cadet Mackenzie Seigler said. “After we were done I was thinking to myself that ‘this is a once in a lifetime experience’ and I was so glad I got to do it!”

CCCHS NJROTC Senior Naval Science Instructor Lt. Col John DePinto said the event was “excellent opportunity for the Cadets of the NJROTC Program of Colleton County High School.”

“The NASCAR event gave the NJROTC program National exposure and an opportunity that they would never have gotten through any of the other programs within Colleton County High School. This program is here to develop good citizens for future leadership positions within the community, and this was an opportunity for these young Cadets to show off their abilities,” Lt. Col DePinto said. “Hopefully, this event is just the beginning of many more opportunities for the Cadets of this program.”
