Purpose

To provide a comprehensive developmental guidance program

by helping students learn to learn, live, and work. This includes

offering individual counseling, group counseling, classroom

guidance lessons, parent / teacher / community consultation

and services and referral services.

  • Learning to Learn means helping students with academic areas,

such as, study skills, organization, and listening skills.

  • Learning to Live means providing services to help students

with personal issues, such as, self-esteem, abuse, divorce,

          grief / loss, or bullying.

  • Learning to Work means providing information about careers,

what employers expect, giving career assessments, etc…

Individual Counseling Services

Sessions for students who need one on one

consultation with the counselor.

Group Counseling Services

Provided when there is a group of students with a similar issue.

They come together in a series of sessions, organized by the

counselor, to share and discuss their issues with each other and

the counselor.

Parent / Teacher / Community Consultation and Services

Covers a wide area. It includes things, such as, scheduling and attending

meetings when necessary, scheduling visits from various organizations,

organizing education / career related field trips, shadowing experiences, etc…

Referral Services

Provided to parents who may seek outside assistance for their child,

whether it is for counseling, tutoring, etc…

We will do our best to assist you in finding the necessary services.

Classroom Guidance Lessons

Taught on issues, such as, bullying, stress management,

teamwork / cooperation, drug / alcohol abuse, etc…

These topics are decided from needs assessments given to the students,

teachers and parents at the beginning of the school year.

Attention: Parents of 8th Grade Students

We are now in the process of scheduling and completing

Individual Graduation Plan Conferences for our 8th grade

students and their parents. These plans are to be created

by the student with the assistance of the School Counselor,

Career Specialist, and, of course, parent(s) / guardian(s).

The purpose of this plan is to have your child choose a high

school career cluster and to make a course request for 9th grade.

Of course, students may change their cluster / major over the

course of their high school career, but, we will at least be

able to get them thinking about their futures. We will be

using the career assessments and job shadowing experiences

that your child has completed in middle school to assist in

making decisions on a career cluster. If you have not yet made

an appointment for the Individual Graduation Plan conference,

please contact Mrs. Bishop (school counselor) at Ruffin Middle

School as soon as possible.
